taking a moment to brag a little

Postby The Scorekeeper » April 12th, 2012, 7:47 am

some of the people here (ok, most of the people here) are athletic, coordinated, and good at doing things like walking in a straight line without giving themselves a black eye.

i am not one of those people.

for me just getting safely to 1st base without causing another runner to be out is an absolute miracle. making it safely to any other base? nigh impossible. i've been playing since 2006 and i think i've successfully crossed home plate to score runs a total of 5 times ever. so it is with the greatest of pride that i must brag about my performance last night.

for some bizarre reason my captain decided i should kick 2nd. normally i kick as far down in the order as they can possibly put me. i spent an entire season kicking dead last, under the assumption that basically every time i'd be the third out, allowing the next inning to start at the top of the order. so when i saw the kicking order, i tried to talk him out of it. "put me third. put me 11th. just don't put me 2nd." when i couldn't convince him otherwise i said "ok, well after you see how badly this fails, you'll change it for next week."

my first at bat, i moved our lead off from 1st to 3rd where they tried to throw him out and missed, allowing him to score. my second at bat i was lead off, making it safely to 1st. with bryan right behind me, i also went 1st to 3rd. third kicker loaded the bases while i distracted the pitcher (i DIDN'T fall for the pump fake), and the 4th kicker brought me home. i even managed to do it all without doing something stupid like kicking myself in the knee or punching myself in the eye!

then to top it all off, i had short right for the first 4 innings, backing up our 1st baseman (who looks like stu, which kinda freaks me out). in the third inning a kicker from the other team put a ball right over the 1st baseman's right shoulder and by the grace of God i didn't shy away, wince, or drop the ball. i caught a pop fly!

i know. making it on base, advancing runners, scoring runs, catching pop flies... nbd for a lot of you. but for me, it might have been the best game of kickball i've ever played. and of course there is not a shred of photographic evidence so we can all chalk it up to a sunstroke induced hallucination.

Sooo, did you advance to second?

I had to call in a few favors, but I was able to get a photo from a nearby intersection. Pretty sure that looks like scorekeeper on third.

Nice work.

lol sadly, no. i was out at 1st because i'm the slowest runner ever, but with bryan kicking 3rd it was effectively like having two lead-off runners.

Great job!!

I do this often, flipping the order, and it's always a pleasant surprise to see what people who generally kick low can/will do when you have the confidence in them (even if you have to force them!) to put them up top.

I hope you stay kicking 2nd!

Great job, The Scorekeeper! Applause from Denver. Keep us all updated how you do next week. Good luck!

Yes, I hope you stay kicking 2nd as well! (At least until Week 7).

Seriously, glad you had a kick ass game for Kick Ass! Don't be so sure about the lack of photographic evidence though. Bryan Pena from Foul Balls was out taking video last night for the Peninsula podcast. He said he got some of every 6:30 and 8:30 game, so hopefully, he got some April highlights.

somehow i really doubt i'll be kicking 2nd again any time soon, but i guess we'll have to see what manny says next week.

iirc, by the time he showed up we were already in the third or fourth inning. he might have caught me leading off, but i'm pretty sure he missed everything else. i'll keep my eyes peeled for it, though. i did tell jorts that i expect a shout out at least once this season. lol

it sure was nice not to be up to kick with bases loaded and two outs, though... (which happened twice last week)

I did enjoy a potentially sticky situation where I was almost at second base on their overthrow to first and screaming at you to "GO, April!" because you were happy to have advanced to second and were catching your breath. Like a good team mate, you hustled over to third while they were still fumbling with the ball.

When that pop fly came towards her, the look of absolute concentration on her face was quite endearing.

Also, during the game, I botched a routine spin throw from catcher. Doh!

i did nothing of note last night. my goal going in was, and is always, just don't screw up so badly i cost the team a win. in that, i did perfectly. we won 4-2 (or 5-2? i didn't have the book). i feel like i'm getting into a solid routine at short right, watching for liners and pop flies, backing up 1st base, and generally looking like i'm paying attention so people are less likely to kick my way. i was offered a position on someone's peninsula waar team and told i'd be the best girl they have. lol sorry...

my first at-bat was a 3rd baseline bunt that i feel like was a good bunt, but i came too slow out of the box and got beat to the bag by a couple steps. sucks, too because i was lead-off that inning and i felt like i really had it down. guess it's time for more wind sprints at lunch... meanwhile, my second at-bat we had a runner on 1st and no outs (i was kicking 2nd that inning, but i think 10th or 11th overall). somehow one of the more average pitchers i've ever faced was giving me trouble and what should have been a routine bunt down 3rd ended up going straight up the 1st base line. i got out, but advanced the runner. now, the guy ahead of me was supposed to be the clean up kicker for the set before. he's a pretty massive guy and not especially mobile (boy can he cream a ball, though!). if it had been just about anybody else on the team, they would have made it to third easily on my bunt but this guy made it to 2nd. i mean, hey, at least he advanced and i still did something good, i wish it could have been more productive in some way.

i'm now 1-6 on base for the season. damn, i need to run faster...

lol because i love kim but he's no dave regelsky or blake. let's be honest. he clearly caused me some issue, so i guess that makes him a better-than-average pitcher, but i don't see kim take the mound and fear for my life or worry that i can't handle the pitches. (maybe i should after how well i didn't do last night)

now, being on the receiving end of his kicking is another story. he's got mad foot skills, he's very fast, and he's a smart base runner. i do get nervous when he's up to kick.

p.s. i didn't call him out, you did. ;)
