[PAKC2012] Official Team List

Postby JimmyB » May 30th, 2012, 8:39 pm

I do agree that if you had to do a cross over game, you should match 1 with 1, etc... because who can really complain about an evenly matched game? If you're the 1 seed in your pool you're probably moving on already, but the #4 seed might have an outside shot to move on but they'll have to face another #1?

If you look at it purely from "strength of schedule" if you matched 1 with 1, etc... then everyone would have to play a 1, 2, 3, and 4. That's fair.

No Dead Weight won't be attending PAKC but expect them in NYC and Boston.

But I WILL give you a recipe for success for PAKC.

That's what i was thinking too. The only thing at stake for the #1s and 2s is probably just seeding for elims. But for those 3s and 4s, that last pool play game could be the difference between making the elims and not... It would almost create a "play in" type of feel for those 3v3 and 4v4 matches.

I never really understood this argument. What does it matter if the 4th game is pool or elim as long as everyone gets a 4th game? And if you're worried about "meaning," what's more meaningful than an elimination game? That's 1 more round with actual meaning, and 1 less pool game, which is at least equally likely to have zero meaning to either team involved as it is to have any meaning. Anyone that wants more meaningful games would be in favor of fewer pool games and more elimination games.

In your scenario it only makes the 4th game meaningful. Pool play where every team makes it to elims means smart, deep teams rest their best players, starters, important reserves, sleep in, whatever, for their first three games. That makes for a massive competitive disadvantage for the other teams.

Agreed. A lot of talented teams capable of beating anyone there. Most consistent team is taking this one home. No room for a letdown game.

3 pools of 5 seems to make the most sense. Gives you 4 pool play games. Top two from each pool with two wild cards? Top 4 from each pool with byes?

If they can get one more, i'd guess it would be 4 pools of 4, with a crossover game.

How many teams make elims since it's now locked in at 15 teams?

I'd assume 8 teams would make elims. There's no sense in putting everyone in when you'd have to give a team a bye in elims. I don't think it's a privilege for the top seed(s) to sit and rest while other teams play.

I think 8 teams has been standard for elims in tournaments this size.

I like the 1 vs. 1 idea. It'll make for more accurate seeding come elimination, challenges the top teams more during pool play, and gives the bottom teams a chance to play a more evenly matched team.

Yeah, if the goal of the pool play is to ensure the top 8 advance, than what better way to do that then to have teams who are competing for those last elim spots play each other in the last game of the round? Those 3vs3 and 4v4 games will have huge implications. And the 1v1 and 2v2 games would have a pretty good impact on the seedings at the top half.

So, the question would be do you use the initial seeds to set these matchups, or do you use pool play results to determine 1 v 1, etc.?

I'd say pool play results, personally. We all know how controversial seedings have been in past tourneys.

I think I had them at 6 and my sleeper team, and that was before my addition. We'll see how all the parts mix.
