New Power Poll?

Postby admin » April 2nd, 2009, 9:55 am

To all kickballers....

Yes, it has been a year, but it's going to be worth it. We've (K365) been working with a VERY TALENTED user to craft up something we think EVERYONE is going to like.

Give us a week (or so) and you'll be getting two new treats:
1. A new National Power Poll (thanks to Shane)
2. A NEW National FAN Poll (where YOU the users will get to VOTE and ADD YOUR OWN TEAM!)

Get excited, this thing is going to rock.

Thanks,
Admin

No offense JD, M2S is not the Others. M2S was an open tourney team! Like what the Florida people are doing for the TKOII!
No disrespect, 2E, but I think I know a little more about The Others and M2S. No, they are not the same "teams." The bulk of those M2S players are on The Others, and added to them is more tournament wins, championships, and experience than most regions have combined. Now, whether the team "gels" or not is a question not yet answered. That's why I asked how this poll would be weighted. If it is more about past performance, fine, but if it is more like a pre-season poll, then that's a different story.

Non taken, I knew that the people on the Others had more wins and experience than most teams. Will they be a power house, I have no doubt. We will see as your season gets on the way. This is what makes this power poll fun and interesting. Everyone will weigh teams differently.

Not for nothing but will there be something to prevent a captain from telling the entire roster to go and vote for a team that really has no buisness being on the polls?

lol i'm sure i'd be the only one to nominate them anyway. nobody else in the division would notice us but kim, and somehow i don't see him nominating us for anything other than "jerkface asshats that came to ruin my division". hehehe

i did suggest "We Demand Black" as our team name, btw...

No offense but I would never endorse nominating a team from Sunday Funday to a power poll, I don't care what they're season record is. It's easy to excel in a division designed for fun. Hell, we don't even allow anything other than underhand pitching. If y'all want to make a name play in a competitive division, beat teams that care.

FYI -
The National Fan Poll will be populated by everyone who visits the feature and votes. You'll be limited to voting for the Top 25 teams ONCE PER DAY. This entire list will be featured (& discussed) on K365's Blog and Forum.

Another idea. The way you suggest can count for a percentage of the votes and than the way Trey suggests can count for the remaining percentage.

That sounds more like a popularity contest.

I'd like to go forward with the Panel Power Poll idea. I think 20 knowledgeable posters have a much better chance of ranking the teams accurately than a Popularity Contest or one voter's opinion.

I get why you're doing the Fan Poll. It'll surely drive people to the website. But if you're interested in an accurate poll, I'd recommend the panel.

So make the panels votes count for 75% and the fan votes count for 25%.

The poll will be the Top 20 teams. I will take the average of all voters, assigning 1 point for 1st place and 20 points for 20th place. I will tally the total points and rank the teams accordingly.

Let me know if you're interested. My goal is to get a poll out the first week of every month.

The poll and ranking should be like something like The Ring magazine does in boxing. Any real boxing fan knows that the Ring champion is the real champion, not boxers that hold titles that mean nothing.

IDK Trey, I'm not sure anyone from any division can rank teams from another division that they have never played or at least seen play. You have teams on there that are not tournament teams so they exist in a vacuum outside of their division. If AD and AO play to a tie what does that tell the Panel? In the tournament they beat you and us by one, but in regular season we tied them and you beat us by 7. Nobody out side the division has seen either team play. Too dynamic to read a lot into it. Coaches polls have the benefit of taped games and stat keeping to base their votes on.

Ummm, you did beat us. I'm just saying trying to rank teams on a score report from a game you didn't see for a league you don't play in isn't exactly much more statistically valid than letting everybody vote using whatever criteria they want.

a) While a panel might not have alot of people who have seen AD or AO play, a good majority of us understand that VA-Recess is playing at a higher level of competion than most divisions. Chances are I'd be more likely to put a 3rd, 4th, or 5th place team in Recess ahead of a 1st place team from a division that doesn't have the strength of schedule or national play experience (For example one of the Boston divisions, especailly if the tops teams get split up not since the normal top division there isn't playing this summer)
b) I would hope that some of the stronger divisions would have more representation on the panel (2 or 3 people from FL-Beach makes sense, more than one from Hartford not so much. And by not so much I mean at all)

Which is why you do what I have done the past 3 years and ask your sources in the area their opinions on how the game went ... and give their expert advice the proper weight. Both perspectives -- that of the local expert who plays the day-to-day kickball in the region -- and that of folks who look at the national scene in general and its historical evolution -- in my opinion, deserve weight in any attempt at a ranking system.

I agree with you 100%. And I believe that is what Trey's panel would do. You would have a representative giving the 411 on their division.

But you can still tell us if a team or two is really starting to pick up the competitive game and/or is getting the itch to travel to tourneys before Founders Cup.

Not nearly as well as Zak could.

We are hoping to have some representation in Vegas this year.. I know of a few teams that have qualified that are hoping to go... But who knows.

Once that happens, I think people will get bit by the travel bug, and become a bit more motivated in terms of competing at the national level.

KA and Gonzo played in VA; M2S in DC. I guess we all played within 20 miles of each other. I'm sure most of us either work or live relatively close to each other.

Hey Trey,

I don't make many posts but I do get on this website a lot. I'd like to be on this list on giving feedback regarding the AZ Teams.

Not nearly as well as Zak could.

We are hoping to have some representation in Vegas this year.. I know of a few teams that have qualified that are hoping to go... But who knows.

Once that happens, I think people will get bit by the travel bug, and become a bit more motivated in terms of competing at the national level.

El Guapo is planning on representing the midwest (KC!) and going to Vegas to make their tournament debut.

Honestly, I don't really want my Sunday Vegas qualifying team to be ranked until we make whatever showing we make in Vegas.

Everyone in Hampton Roads knows that it will be just as good as the Juggernauts at their prime, with additions from teams like Boom Headshot (we have ALL of the infield players from both teams on the Vegas roster), and the winter Crazy Kickers squad.

Also, we have hot chicks. ;)

Did I mention the hot chick brigade? (Bacchus, GawJa, Scorekeeper, and some other ringers make quite the showing at our kickball parties, and will break many a heart in Vegas)

As long as he doesn't rank LS higher than BNB he is legit! 8)

Why don't you put out a preliminary list of teams, maybe a little more extensive than the one Shane threw out at the beginning, and then have any pollster who is familiar with one of the teams on the list just do a quick blurb on what he/she thinks of them. Then the pollsters can send these out amongst themselves, so then if the pollster has seen the team no big deal, but if they haven't, then they're at least better informed than they were before.

I think the panel idea is the way to go, though. Great idea.

That is a good idea. Or we can just have the panel members post how they would rank the divisions they are familiar with, while adding why and some history. Than after that, we can put together a master list of all said teams mentioned and start ranking.

Also, I don't know if he was on there, but Admin should definitely be a pollster.

Also, in my honest opinion, The Others is the best team ever assembled on a kickball field, but we haven't accomplished anything yet as a one team. Meatballs and Lock it Up would round out my top 5, but those top 3 could go any which way.

Lock it Up is Hey Whoa minus Dematas and with a few new additions. Not entirely sure about The Others, but I think that's mainly old M2S?

And I don't believe Swaisgood is on the team either. They shouldn't be ranked anywhere until after the TKO.
My retirement spokesman, sduncan will be handling all questions related to this topic.

Thanks,
Admin

Can we just make sure that this comes out on a regular basis...like the first week of every month?

AMEN. I know I always look forward to the new poll coming out. Plus the MB is always more active when they do. People tend to post more often with results/commentary which will help educate us all about different teams.

Top 5. Probably not until we see them play. I have a feeling this team will make it into the single elimination brackets in Vegas (pending not being in a pool from hell). Therefore top 16, unproven.

Nothing against you and Swaisgood, but there are very few players on any team that are irreplaceable... Sajac was that person on Hey Whoa. As long as Lock it Up has him (and capable people around him), I think they're a solid top 5 team, but a lock for a top 10 spot.

That person on The Others is Lucina. W/o him I just don't see The Others going very far.

Agreed. Something tells me that Lock it Up has already found a suitable replacement at 1B and Charger.

...and there isn't anyone that isn't easily replaced on The Others. That team is 2-3 deep at every skill position.

There is quite honestly nobody that is irreplaceable on The Others.
