...and we are in no way even close saying this b/c we think we could compete vs. the MEATBALLS at all but rather am saying so because we also aren't too well liked it seems. Below is a hilarious e-mail from the Denver GoKickball Coordinator (Ryan) about and to our Captain after the teams he captained finished 1st and 2nd (Dice. Tuesdays and Dice. Thursdays) in Sunday's 32-team Fall Colorado State Championship Tournament:

"Seriously dude, you have issues. Asking me to tell how much a ball was a ball on your pitches? You wonder why all of other teams hated you guys? Cause you are WAY over the top. Keeping track of the stats the way you do that NOBODY anywhere else does or cares? You single-handedly kill everything fun about what we do.... Yes, competition is good... but you are being "that guy". And honestly I think you're probably a good dude outside of kickball. Not trying to be mean, here, but jesus! Honestly, if both of your teams want to go to WAKA or whomever next season, that is perfectly fine by us."

Dear Dice ---

It is time to move to Circuit kickball.

No one, event manager, opposing team, or otherwise, would ever send you a message like this. Quite the contrary - many of us would applaud you for keeping stats, engaging in productive discussion on the strike zone, and, plain and simply, competing without apologizing.

And yes, if I had a nickel every time someone, purportedly without any doubt, ever proclaimed a team "had crossed the Serious-Line-of-Thulsa-Doom-Kill-a-Fetus-and-a-Terrorist-Gets-a-Virgin-Every-Time-They-Score-a-Run for Competitiveness", Greece and Italy would be smoking their surpluses of olives instead of their sovereign debt ...

Also, see Exhibit A - Flying V. Your foil in GOKickball's home territory. 8-)

Jealous much?

You should see if they will pay your WAKA registration so you can give it a "test run" to see if it is fitting for you guys. That would be pretty awesome.

GoKickball must be doing pretty good in Denver if they can afford to tell loyal customers who play multiple nights a week to go to the competition.

Brilliant idea! Funny how we played GoKickball instead of WAKA because we didn’t want the self-umps to criticize us for consistently winning and wanted paid umps. Instead, we got the League Coordinator criticizing us behind the safety of his computer when he was completely cordial and complementary of us just 24 hours before in person. Ha Ha Ha!

Purple Zak Richard wrote:So the email was cause he was asking about 1 pitch being called a ball?

Mostly, the e-mail was because Dice. (Tuesdays) dominated one side of the 32-team bracket and Dice. (Thursdays) dominated the other. Together, they defeated two social teams and the only two other regular season undefeated teams, the champions from Fort Collins, the champions from Colorado Springs, and the Spring and Summer champions (8 different teams) to play one another in the Championship game. (Funny enough… Dice. vs. Dice. ended 1-1 after 7 innings) The strike/ball incident was in our first game of the day when the League Coordinator was umping and was calling every ball that was too high in the zone “a little high.” Our Captain jokingly asked if he would call it “a lot high” if that was the case. He, our Captain and both teams laughed at the time all in jest. 8 wins later and a dominating Championship run and it’s no longer a joke…

FlyingV wrote:They must be doing well...

We thought the same thing, especially since we’re the only team in the state (of all 48 this Fall) to field two teams. Guess the $1,484.00 in registration fees we paid isn’t worth it for them if we go a combined 24-0 on the Fall and outscore our opponents 244-27. Can beggars be choosers?

krabbas wrote:I gotta admit, that trophy is pretty sweet.

Sadly, it’s a “traveling” trophy they engrave with your team name but that you don’t get to keep. We passed on taking home the oversized completed bracket so we’re only left with our personal satisfaction and a sweet unprofessional e-mail from the League Coordinator to show for our efforts.

Our goal for 2012 is to attend the Albuquerque Tournament in May – which we can drive to. Sadly, our team (as a whole) isn’t interested in flying to any tournaments and our Captain isn’t interested in taking on the daunting task of organizing that either. We’re excited to lose to teams like y’all that are sincerely better than us in New Mexico and to see what “real competitive” kickball is. Can’t wait!

We're not gonna let this clown rain on our memorable 2011! We won over 100 games, went over 500 Facebook fans, earned 15 season and tournament championships and donated $1,885.00 to awesome and deserving charities here in Colorado! Nothing like the MEATBALLS' 2011 but we're proud to be the big fish in the small pond that is Colorado kickball. At the end of the day, we had a blast playing w/ one another and will remember the friendships we made and solidified via our kickball in 3, 5, 10, 25 years from now!

Fields we play on don't have lights so at least 10 of those runs came when we would play the last two innings of our games in absolute pitch-black to the point our Captain would have to yell where the ball was going so fielder would know it was coming that way. Ha!

The Shower Hammers are really reaching out to other states. 2 Denver players (which I am guessing move away from NYC to Denver) and they just picked up Kamboobox for next year! NYSH taking over PA's # 2 spot behind MB in 2012.

Nah, the 2 Denver people moved from NorCal (so they're actually slowly moving closer to NYC).

Mr. Dice Kickball,
I will be heading up to Denver in February. Any recommendations on where to stay, what places to go see, what breweries/bars to visit?

Note: I already have a place lined up for 3 nights while I hit the mountains. I just want to spend the weekend in Denver (guessing downtown area) since I have never been.

Thanks

Stay as close to the 16th Street Mall and the hub of the bars - next to the Rockies' Coors Field on 20th & Market. No particular bar recommendations as there are literally 30-40 within 5 blocks of that intersection. Hit me (Mr. Dice. Kickball) up as the dates come closer and I'll go snag some drinks with you. Holler.

thanks for the tips. I will definitely have to as close to the 16th street mall. So I take it most bars/breweries are near 20th & market.

Note to self, find hotel near that intersection.

That whole area is peppered with bars and restaurants. There's lot so cool little boutique hotels in that area if you've got your girl with you. The Magnolia and the Curtis are both nice. I think my favorite bar I went to there is Shag at 15th and Champas, retro art-deco style with old school punk rock/new wave music.

Dice,

I know how you feel. We were a big fish in a small pond for a long time. Our team was way ahead of the curve and flat out dominating for a long time and we were universally hated. Many teams have caught up at this point and it's very competitive to the point that we aren't looked at as the league assholes who try too much. We've been accused of not having fun so many times I can't count them. The only problem is that we were always having fun.

We've been boo'd by entire stands full of spectators at tournaments, told we were not allowed back, and berated at bars by people who think we're "too serious." All of these things were 100% unprovoked on our part as we've never once gone out of the way to humiliate any team nor have we ever done anything after a game to disrespect another team.

Rest assured, though - It won't last forever. At some point another team will rise to your level and take over the most hated spot simply because they're thew new guys who "take it too serious."

We've also had our share of humblings at the hands of teams like PA, MB, LIU, and Dumpster Fire when they were around. Not once did we ever think they were too serious. We always walked away trying to figure out how we could be more like them, instead of wanting to be less like them.

Thanks Zer0ne -- completely agree with you. That phenomenon led to the first competitive franchises out of NYC too. (And other places.)

And it's a big part of why we created The Circuit - so teams would never have to apologize for being too competitive (and opponents would respect and praise that drive, instead of hate on it) - while still having a ton of fun.

You will find many recreational league teams who believe those two things are mutually exclusive. The National Tour and its teams are living proof that they are not.

Interesting GO Kickball Colorado rule change this Spring... "When a MALE (only) is kicking, any player on defense is allowed to charge AFTER the pitch is released from the pitcher. When a FEMALE is kicking, ONLY the pitcher can charge after the pitch."

see, and it's crap like this that makes me not ever want to play "social" leagues. it's insulting to me that they have to make special rules to "give women a chance". forget that noise! if i can't get on base, it's my fault, not yours. i need to either bunt better or run faster (or both).

I'll never understand why some teams get so worked up about losing. Pay attention, emulate the team that beat you, and get better. I've offered to help every team we've beat. We don't have some grand, hidden secret to success.

Wish we could get an Ultra type of league in KC.

This is the underhand pitching league?

yeah, go kickball is underhand with the pitcher being able to charge before the kick. Is this just for Denver or do the other go kickball leagues also now have this rule?

No Rule Change here in Atlanta. It sounds like the rule is designed to keep GUYS from bunting, not necessarily to make it easier for the females.

Only thing that changed was Catcher Interference.

#43. The catcher must play behind the line formed by the two strike-zone cones until after a kicked ball passes the cones. If the catcher opts to play near the cone line, then they must stand at least 2 feet outside of either strike-zone cone, and may not block the kicker's attempt to kick the ball in any way.
#44. CATCHER INTERFERENCE: If a catcher plays near the cone line and moves within 2 feet of the strike-zone cones AND/OR interferes with the kicker's ability to kick the ball in any way, as determined by the referee, then the kicker will be awarded a Walk.

Even with these rule changes, the 12-team Wednesday night GoKickball league will certainly be the most competitive fast-pitch league in Denver at any park on any night (including WAKA) this Spring.

We bunted teams to death in route to steamrolling our two GoKickball leagues and state tournament last Fall so it seems this rule was instituted only in Denver and designed to trying to prevent that from happening again. We'll see how it affects us. Unlike years past where we spread our talent amongst our two teams, we loaded on Tuesday WAKA roster this Spring (with Founders Cup aspirations) so we'll be playing Wednesday GoKickball with our least talented team to date. Should be fun to see how we do!

I love the Catalina Wine Mixer jerseys. The double stripes on the shoulders is a tight retro look! Great job!

Leave it to Brent to talk kickball fashion... his favorite forum topic. Ha Ha Ha! I still like that royal blue Pounders jersey.
