Postby Will0857 » May 2nd, 2012, 2:49 pm

The Virginia Beach Sportsplex has started a fun-first kickball league on Sunday afternoons at 1:00 pm. About a month ago, I (the newly appointed commissioner) was told we'd have 5-6 teams and that our start date would be last week (Sunday, April 29). So I make up the schedule, put together a sweet package and low and behold, Sunday comes around and we have 3 teams and a couple free agents. Needless to say, those free agents were rightly upset and we went into scramble mode. Not the end of the world but certainly a set back.

To fix this, I need 10-12 people in the 757 area that are willing to play on Sunday afternoon's at the turf facility. I will gladly discount your registration fee.

The league plays for the Commissioner's Cup which is a trophy awarded to the team who demonstrates the most well rounded social sports prowess. Each week, teams will compete in kickball, cornhole, and flip cup. The winner of each match will receive a point. At the end of the season, the team with the most total points will be awarded the Commissioner's Cup and have the right to claim they are the Best Social Sports Team in Hampton Roads. you play the same team in all three events on a given week (potential for 3 points per week). In addition to the Commissioner's Cup, we play in a stadium facility that allows us to use their Jumbo-Tron for pictures or just plain watching ESPN. They play music through the loud speakers and after each week, offer food and beer for a super low cost.

I know this is super late to be recruiting and everyone probably is already registered for a Spring sport. The summer league will be in full effect and I assure you, I'll be doing the recruiting for that from the start so there will be plenty of fun teams. As for this Spring, I'd like to fill out the fourth team so the other three teams that stuck with this aren't forced to play each other each week.

Anyone out there able to help us get started?

if it's the same team/league i'm thinking of, he was told "there's no room for you."

That seems rude. I'm not sure who would've told him that. probably not our league. If he (or you) haven't engaged yourselves in a sport for the weekend, feel free to sign up :)

He might've been told he can't bunt in this league. :) No guy bunting, 6 innings, circuit ball, 3 fouls, two-bounce pitching. Other than that, all the rules are the same we know and love.

It's an OK league. Def fun with the cornhole and flipcup events added in. But it does suck with only 3 teams

Lol. Slippery Slope down a glory hole deeper than the best fwiends franchise.

Serious talk, I don't think that k365 is the place to ask people to sign up for a league that has not only already started, it doesn't resemble anything competitive.

If this "league" was properly organized and marketed better from the get go, then it is possible there would be more than 3 teams. This might be one of the best fields in Hampton Roads, and I applaud Sal for doing his best to get in good with the owner for the use of them.

The Foot Snipers and The Peninsula Pounders are thankful beyond measure to the owners for the use of the fields in our scrimmage on Sunday.

I extend my condolences to you and the other captains that paid to play in a league that could only muster up 3 teams and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Buy you a beer on Sunday.

I was sure not to post on a WAKA, WAAR, KLoHR, or BYSC page as to not ruffle the feathers of the commissioners of those leagues (that's just bad business).

The Summer league will have more teams and will be run the right way from the start. Unfortunately, i got brought in at the eleventh hour when the Sportsplex realized they weren't getting any traction. I had one week to rally people and it was late April. Obviously everyone had signed up for something by then.

And the goal is not to get the "Ultra" teams. By all means, they're welcome to play but I don't think they'll get anything out of this league from a competitive stand point. I made sure to distinguish best "Social Sports" team from best "kickball" team (emphasis on "social" which is why we made it a cornhole and flip cup league as well). the Sportsplex officials asked me to simplify the rules and make it accessible to people that aren't the hardcore kickball types.

I for one hate that this place as become Circuit365. I liked it better when the local leagues drove the membership of the message board. But maybe that's just me.

I think we all liked debating and discussing locally, but here in VB, we don't have dominant leagues anymore. We're all running around trying to find the best fields and the best leagues to play. All we can really talk about these days are tourneys.

I've found that most of the players in VB local leagues don't care about sharing their kickball experiences online.

speaking of Circuit, those of you that were at the Sportsplex on Sunday, do you think it would be big enough to hold the VBKO? On of the other captains mentioned it to the guy at the plex and he seemed intrigued about that being used as a possible destination for the tournament. He has that field we played on, plus the field hockey turf which is the same size on the compound at his exposure. i could see those two spots holding maybe 6 games at a time. would that be enough? I've not played the circuit tourneys before so i'm not sure of their logistics

Although I enjoy the message board, I would never think of steering my customers here. Too much negativity.

Anyways, good luck, Will. Sounds like the Sportsplex guys are finding out that running a kickball/social sports league isn't as easy as it looks (even if the description of the league sounds like it should sell itself).

Off the top of my head, it would be close. Last year VBKO had 14 teams split into two pools. We may have had gotten away with 6 fields for pool play; however I would think that capping a tourney at 14 teams because there are no fields isn't the way we'd want to promote it. Though the sportsplex fields are definitely the kind preferred to play on.

As for VBKO this year, they may have pools booked up already. If they don't, they should be close.

Lastly, the sportsplex league is laid back and should have a chance to take off if promoted effectively in future seasons. Great fields and the fact that you can go straight from the fields to the "after-party" is a bonus.

6 fields could hold a tournament of 15 teams, which is about how many VBKO tends to draw. You'd probably want enough fields available where you have the ability to accommodate 20 teams or more, just to be safe.

It helps that the party is at the field instead of people having to get in the car and go to a sponsor bar. you tend to lose people that way.

Will,

I would see if the guy has access to the non-turf fields that they use for the PAAC leagues. Those were very nice grass fields. If you combine both those sets of fields, you definitely would have enough space. They are right across the street from the Sportsplex.

We looked into havin the VBKO there, but the cost for renting the fields for a day tournament were outrageous to say the least. (We got more field space for half the cost at Red Wing Park). If they would be willing to come down on price I'm sure there could be some discussion in the future. (Fields are already booked for the 2012 tournament).

Unfortunately, those are run by the City whereas the Sportsplex is run by a private entity (tax payer subsidized of course). However, he has a field for the US Field Hockey team that is located right behind that party pit we did flip cup and corn hole in. same dimensions, actually nicer turf on those. so he has quite a bit of field space. I can take you through that facility on Sunday and you can give me your thoughts then.

Although I do agree with you, the princess anne softball fields and the rest of their facilities are very, very nice natural grass surfaces.

Will - thanks for posting this information. We've gotten a shell forum started for the league, and I've copied a link to this post to that forum. If you can provide us any other information (league-specific website, Facebook page, etc.), we'll be happy to get that online.

Just putting it out there "for the record" a tournament would NOT be possible at the Sportsplex. This past weekend our games were moved from the Plex over to the US Field Hockey Training Center and I don't think having a Circuit Tourney there, in the future, would be a good idea.

The turf is WILDLY different than what we're used to (soccer/football turf) I looked everywhere online and it simply describes it as "artificial turf" but this is cooshy carpet turf. No grass blades, just 100% flat with some sort of rubber underneath which makes it feel a little squishy.

Anyway there is also a strict "no molded cleats" policy (which we all broke on Sunday because...it was a last minute change...and playing barefoot on a 100+ degree day on that turf was not an option!

The fields are gorgeous...obviously...it's the home of a National Olympic Team...but from a kickball perspective it would be very difficult to deal with...Ohhh and there are low chain link fences all around the immediate field of play...convenient for stopping field hockey balls (and convenient for popping kickballs and creating lots of home runs/ground rule doubles)
