Why are we still using the term Adult Kickball?

Postby Kickbot » June 14th, 2012, 1:52 pm

"Kickball" describes the sport perfectly well. "Adult Kickball" sound weird and silly.

Everyone outside this message board still considers kickball a elementary school playground sport for kids.

Why call it Women's Basketball? Why call it Co-ed Softball? To me it's the same as Adult kickball? It helps us understand more who is playing.

This weekend a bunch of Panik'ers were...errr...at the same location...and it was pretty funny that all these 5 year olds were wrapping up playing soccer annnd we were about to go play kickball.

A large crowd of middle school aged boys and their parents gathered and watched us...one can only imagine what they were thinking.

Agreed. Nearly every sport started out as nothing more than a kids game at some point.

Kickball is way more interesting than a lot of recently added Olympic sports like Handball for instance.

What other products/services/activities can you think of that start with the "Adult" modifier? I can think of a couple.

Adult Entertainment
Adult Toys
Adult Swim
Adult Soccer

One of these is not like the others...

If you google "Adult", the first 20 hits are strip clubs.

How many people that haven't heard of "adults" playing kickball, have a reaction outside of "the kicks game?"

Pretty much all kickball organizations have "Adult" in their name.

Or because the best acronyms require a vowel.

WAKA
WAAR
NAKID
NAKAD

Where would those acronyms be without the "A"?

It's called groupthink. People see something, adopt the idea mindlessly and then defend it vehemently, having given exactly ZERO critical though to its value or utility.

Nah. that'll never work. Wait.. we have a big rubber ball - let's call it Softball. Nah. That sounds lame. We can peg people with the ball right? Let's call it dodgeball!

I didn't say it made any sense, only that that's what it's called. It seems completely arbitrary other than maybe that the Chinese claim that they invented the roots of soccer before the English did.

Ummm...it already has another name...buntball. Duh!

I typically use the term "competitive kickball" when describing what I do. If we're gonna keep calling it Adult kickball, the uni's need to be a lot different. Plus I expect to start fixing some copiers.

There's gonna be debauchery and all kinds of inappropriate stuff happening.
We should put some adult ads in the Hotlanta naughty page papers.

What about 'competitive kickball' as opposed to adult kickball? To me, kickball by itself is inherently childish. When you say its competitive, it seems to get a reaction that you take it just a bit more seriously.

For instance, "I play kickball" is usually met with, "Oh nice, I played kickball in a league one year/middle school." Whereas "I play competitive kickball" is usually followed by "_Competitive_ Kickball? What's that even mean?"

Not all of us are playing on that level 100% of the time. Competitive kickball does not properly describe the sloshball game that happened in Austin.

Hmmm ^. Yup...I'd agree with that...and have gotten that exact reaction/question. Always a great segue into speaking about the Circuit.
